Hiking vs Trekking

Many people tend to use the words hiking and trekking as if they are the same thing. While they are similar in certain ways, there are certain points of difference as well. However, if you do not understand the difference between hiking and trekking, you are not alone.

We are here to help you in clarifying the confusion surrounding the differences between the two outdoor sports.

Let’s discuss the key differences between hiking and trekking so you can decide which activity suits you the best

Hiking vs. trekking — Definition

Trekking means making a long or difficult journey, especially on foot.

Hiking is an activity where you can go for long walks in the country for pleasure.

Moreover, there are other points of difference between hiking and trekking. Read on to know more about the difference:

Duration of activity

Trekking can usually last for two days or longer. People who go trekking typically have a destination in mind.

On the other hand, hikes are mostly shorter in duration compared to treks. Hiking can take a few hours, or it can be an overnight experience. However, it won’t take several days like trekking.

Type of terrain

Another important difference between hiking and trekking is the type of terrain. Hikers commonly use hiking trails to explore mountains, forests, hills, or other natural environments.

However, trekking involves exploring unexplored nature consisting of different terrains, mountains, or beaches.

Equipment

The equipment required for hiking and trekking is the same. For hiking, you may only need basic stuff like the best hiking shoes or boots suitable for mountain terrain. Clothing that can handle sudden changes, backpack, food, or other necessary things.

However, when you are going for a trek, you need a lot more stuff as the duration is long — starting with a map, compass, sleeping bag, sleeping mats, waterproof jackets, and multi-purpose clothing suitable for all weather conditions.

Difficulty

You should have knowledge of the fact that trekking is a different level of effort which requires physical strength and training to be able to trek for days. Hiking, on the other hand, is a leisure activity that is easier than trekking. In hiking, you can choose the trail according to your physical activity.

Accommodation

If you are going hiking, you are most likely out for a day. So most people stay in a certain mountain hut or a camp.

But in trekking, people never return to the same location since the journey is focused on a specific location. Each time they stop, they stay in different accommodation, including hotels, lodges, mountain areas, or other types of accommodation.

We hope that now you have a good idea regarding what differentiates hiking from trekking.

Knowing the differences between these two activities allows you to choose the best hiking gear or best trekking gear for your outdoor activity and make your experience a memorable one.

Happy Travelling!
